Freud's Odyssey: Psychoanalysis, Evolution, and the End of Metaphysics

Freud's Odyssey: Psychoanalysis, Evolution, and the End of Metaphysics Review

This philosophical interpretation of Freud’s thought casts a revealing light on the perplexities besetting a major architect of the modern outlook as he strove to come to grips with the conflict between Darwin’s theory of evolution and the Western philosophical tradition over the status of human existence.

Offering a new perspective on the tensions and transformations of psychoanalytic theory, it demonstrates how Freud’s quest to articulate a science of the soul involved an internal contradiction that, in turn, engendered the relentless dynamic evident in the unfolding of the psychoanalytic theory of the mind.

Seeing Freud’s thought as situated at the intersection between Western metaphysics and the natural scientific revolution consummated by Darwin, Draenos’ interpretation offers fresh insight into a number of contentious issues surrounding Freud’s writings: the discovery of the unconscious, the origin of the sexual theme, the introduction of narcissism midway through his course, the significance of Totem and Taboo, the belated appearance of an ego-concept in his late writings, and the emergence of the Eros and death instincts.

This digital edition provides a new introduction to the print version published in 1982 by Yale University Press.

Stan Draenos is the author of "Andreas Papandreou: The Making of a Greek Democrat and Political Maverick" (London: IB Tauris, 2012).

Freud, the Reluctant Philosopher

Freud, the Reluctant Philosopher Review

Freud began university intending to study both medicine and philosophy. But he was ambivalent about philosophy, regarding it as metaphysical, too limited to the conscious mind, and ignorant of empirical knowledge. Yet his private correspondence and his writings on culture and history reveal that he never forsook his original philosophical ambitions. Indeed, while Freud remained firmly committed to positivist ideals, his thought was permeated with other aspects of German philosophy. Placed in dialogue with his intellectual contemporaries, Freud appears as a reluctant philosopher who failed to recognize his own metaphysical commitments, thereby crippling the defense of his theory and misrepresenting his true achievement. Recasting Freud as an inspired humanist and reconceiving psychoanalysis as a form of moral inquiry, Alfred Tauber argues that Freudianism still offers a rich approach to self-inquiry, one that reaffirms the enduring task of philosophy and many of the abiding ethical values of Western civilization.

Leonardo da Vinci and a Memory of His Childhood (The Standard Edition) (Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud)

Leonardo da Vinci and a Memory of His Childhood (The Standard Edition) (Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud) Review

Leonardo da Vinci (1910) remains among the most fascinating, though speculative, works of Freud's entire output.

A detailed reconstruction of Leonardo's emotional life from his earliest years, it represents Freud's first sustained venture into biography from a psychoanalytic perspective, and also his effort to trace one route that homosexual development can take.

On Dreams

On Dreams Review

He was a pioneer in the study of the human unconscious and the impact of sexual desire on human behavior, and his 1900 work The Interpretation of Dreams is arguably one of the greatest treatises on psychology ever written. But Freud recognized that it was not an easy tome to digest, and prepared this shorter, more accessible version. First published in 1914, On Dreams is a highly readable introduction to Freud's theories on one of the most mysterious aspects of the human mind. He discusses: • the meaning of dreams • the mechanisms of dreams • dreams as the realization of unfulfilled desires • dreams and repression • three classes of dreams • dream symbolism • and more. Austrian psychiatrist SIGMUND FREUD (1856-1939) developed psychoanalysis-dialogue between doctor and patient-as a tool for understanding and curing psychopathologies. While some of his ideas have been supplanted by subsequent research and refinement, his work continues to profoundly influence the sciences and the humanities alike.

Explorer of the Mind: The Biography of Sigmund Freud

Explorer of the Mind: The Biography of Sigmund Freud Review

Sigmund Freud, the “Father of Psychoanalysis,” remains a towering figure even 73 years after his death. His development of such therapeutic innovations as the “talking cure,” free association, and dream interpretation revolutionized our understanding of human thought and behavior. Featuring more than 170 images and at least 15 facsimile documents, including rare memorabilia from the Sigmund Freud Archives, Explorer of the Mind details the life of this iconoclastic genius, examining how he developed his famous theories. It also reveals his struggles with his own neuroses and how they led to his pioneering self-analysis, in which he refined his still-unproven techniques by applying them to himself.

The Penguin Freud Reader. Sigmund Freud (Penguin Modern Classics)

The Penguin Freud Reader. Sigmund Freud (Penguin Modern Classics) Review

Here are the essential ideas of psychoanalytic theory, including Freud's explanations of such concepts as the Id, Ego and Super-Ego, the Death Instinct and Pleasure Principle, along with classic case studies like that of the Wolf Man. Adam Phillips's marvellous selection provides an ideal overview of Freud's thought in all its extraordinary ambition and variety. Psychoanalysis may be known as the talking cure', yet it is also and profoundly, a way of reading. Here we can see Freud's writings as readings and listenings, deciphering the secrets of the mind, finding words for desires that have never found expression. Much more than this, however, The Penguin Freud Reader presents a compelling reading of life as we experience it today, and a way in to the work of one of the most haunting writers of the modern age.

Sigmund Freud in Plain and Simple English

Sigmund Freud in Plain and Simple English Review

The works and thoughts of Sigmund Freud has been scaring people for years. All his talk about Id, ego, and Super-Ego is enough to send some people running to their mothers. But Freud doesn't have to be complicated!

This short book looks at Freud's most popular theories (like the unconscious mind, the mechanism of repression, dream psychology, the Id, Ego and Super-Ego, and, of course, penis envy!) and puts it in language that anyone can understand.

It's the perfect introduction for people interested in psychology, or students struggling to understand key concepts.

Reflections on War and Death (Authorized English Translation) (With Active Table of Contents)

Reflections on War and Death (Authorized English Translation) (With Active Table of Contents) Review

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist who founded the discipline of psychoanalysis. Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the mechanism of repression, and for creating the clinical method of psychoanalysis for investigating the mind and treating psychopathology through dialogue between a patient (or "analysand") and a psychoanalyst.
Freud postulated that sexual drives were the primary motivational forces of human life, developed therapeutic techniques such as the use of free association, discovered the phenomenon of transference in the therapeutic relationship and established its central role in the analytic process; he interpreted dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires. He was an early neurological researcher into cerebral palsy, aphasia and microscopic neuroanatomy, and a prolific essayist, drawing on psychoanalysis to contribute to the history, interpretation and critique of culture.
